Descrizione

We are Greta and Monica, Future International Cooperators and we are both here by carrying out two research projects for our theses, respectively focusing on Arab Spring and the Battle of LGBTQI + Associations in Tunisia.

Precisely on the subject of discrimination of the LGBTQI + community in Tunisia and in the Maghreb (Tunisia-Algeria-Morocco) wants to focus our journey.

During the study period in Tunis, we came into contact with LGBTQI + activists. We have known the cultural ferment and the commitment of their struggle, which is the struggle not only for a specific group, but for human rights. It is a fight against the normalization of the Genders and the freedom to express for what it is, to create a world where it is to come removed the fear of being discriminated or persecuted for their own form of being and of love. The activities of associations range from advocacy, to artistic expressions such as “Chouftouhonna artistic competition”.

In Tunisia, local associations have wrote a synergistic report for United Nations Periodic Exam for the purpose of to describe the daily harassments suffered by LGBTQI + communities, which take strength from the article 260 of the Penal Code for up to 3 years of age jail for the sodomy offense.

In Morocco and Algeria, the situation is not better: as in Tunisia, in both states there is a law punishing homosexuality up to 3 years of imprisonment.

For the geographic-cultural proximity of these three countries, with our journey, we would like create a network that connects the various local realities, starting from Italy.

We will take from one city to another, to all the associations that will be made available to Collaborate (we are already in touch with some Tunisian associations), the voices and the Testimonies of the activists of the respective countries, through the forms and objects that they have same associations can choose from time to time. In the meantime, we will collect further testimony directed through interviews that will enhance our projects search.

The journey and our relay will start from our cities of origin (Milan and Palermo) where we will bear the testimonies and support of Italian LGBTQI + associations in North Africa to continue in Tunisia and finally Morocco.

Our desire is to expose part of our audio-visual work and to propose it to the “Chouf association” for the feminine arts festival, which for years has been working with a form of artistic activism and then proposing  that work in Italy.
