Piante che raccontano la Basilicata

Loricato è un’idea di viaggio a piedi, di circa 300 km, attraverso la direttrice ideale disegnata dal Sentiero Lucano lungo l’omonimo Appennino. Il progetto è volto alla conoscenza del patrimonio naturalistico del territorio e del rapporto uomo-natura instauratosi nel tempo.
Meta del cammino è il Monte Pollino, habitat della pianta più emblematica ed antica dell’Appennino Lucano: il Pinus leucodermis, detto Pino Loricato.
Il senso del cammino è la raccolta e conservazione della flora spontanea, corredata da storie o semplici memorie che il popolo custodisce riguardo alla flora stessa o al territorio in generale. Le piante raccolte verranno utilizzate, dunque, come documenti storici nel tentativo di comprendere i mutamenti relazionali tra comunità locali e natura. La persistente presenza di specie naturali endemiche infatti non è casuale, bensì testimonianza di questa complessa interazione.
L’ampio erbario e gli scritti divulgativi che ne deriveranno proveranno così a raccontare una piccola “storia naturale” delle montagne lucane.
In continuità con il discorso di cammino eco-sostenibile, tale “storia naturale” avrà come supporto un opuscolo biodegradabile realizzato in modo tale da contenere uno o più semi delle piante raccolte i quali, a discrezione del lettore, potranno essere conservati o seminati.
Un viaggio lento, estraneo alla logica del turismo, per concedere il giusto tempo alla comprensione di questi temi.
Con la speranza di essere uno spunto per altri viaggiatori alla ricerca di nuove dialettiche.

Getting to know Basilicata through the stories of plants

The idea for Loricato is to travel around 300 km, by foot, along a particular path on the Apennine mountain range in Basilicata, called Sentiero Lucano. The aim is to understand the natural heritage of the area and the relationship established between humans and nature over time.
Part of the walk will be on Mount Pollino, a habitat emblematic for having the most ancient plant life of the Apennines of Basilicata: scientifically called Pinus leucodermis and informally known as Pino Loricato.
The objective will be achieved by collecting and conserving various wild and spontaneous species of plants that are encountered along the way. This will be accompanied by short stories from locals about the plants and the territory in general. The collected plants will be used as historical documents, in the hopes to better understand the changing dynamics in the relationship between local communities and nature. Indeed, the ability for these native species to persist is directly correlated to those changing dynamics. The abundant plant life available in the area and the writings that will result from it, will try to tell a small natural history of the mountains of Basilicata.
In continuity with the theme of conservation and eco-sustainability through walking, the project would like to offer a biodegradable booklet about the information that was collected during the travels. This booklet will be designed to contain one or more seeds of the collected plants, which, at the readers discretion can be kept or planted.
This will be a slow journey, far from the logic of tourism and allowing for the time needed to understand these issues.
With the hope of stimulating travelers to look for new forms of dialectics related to traveling.
